            The Thoreau Project

            Written By: Ms. Kelly Wolfsheimer
Ms. Wolfsheimer’s American Literature classes participated in “The Thoreau Project”--a project- based learning experience focusing on the teachings of the Transcendentalist thinkers, Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, among others. As part of this unit, students are challenged to reflect on their lives and their faith. We read Walden by Thoreau, “Self-Reliance” by Emerson, and the novel Into the Wild. Students had to simplify their life by giving up one habit that complicates their life (such as social media or their phone) or added something that makes their life better (eating healthier, getting more sleep). Students journaled about their progress. Thoreau wrote, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately… and not when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” So on a beautiful fall day, we walked the beautiful Calvary campus and sat out under the trees, read Thoreau, and discussed our priorities, our faith, our lives. At the end of the unit, students presented a 3-5 minute presentation answering the question “What is the Meaning of Life?”
